Nanoborygo is a product developed as part of the research and development project “Ecological nanop fluid for car radiators with innovative performance parameters,” co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund under the Operational Programme Intelligent Development 2014-2020, action 1.2 “Sectoral R&D programmes,” sectoral programme INNOCHEM.

1. How does the Nanofluid enhance the efficiency of cooling systems?
The nanofluid for car radiators that you are working on is intended to enhance the efficiency of cooling systems in both combustion and electric vehicles – how is this goal to be achieved?
The product is a coolant with innovative performance parameters. These innovative performance parameters include increased thermal conductivity, which is responsible for the efficiency of the heating and cooling processes in heating and cooling systems. The improvement in thermal conductivity is due to nanofillers (which are additives of solid particles at the nanoscale, where nano refers to a dimension of 10^-9m).
Due to their size, including an extremely developed specific surface area, nanofillers exhibit different properties compared to the same materials at the macro scale. In the case of the applied nanofillers, a significant increase in thermal conductivity has been achieved.
2. What distinguishes the Nanofluid from its competitors?
What advantages does your fluid have over others currently available on the market? What elements of its composition contribute to this advantage?
The elements that create the advantage include greater thermal conductivity compared to available coolant fluids on the market. There are currently no commercially available solutions of this type in the Polish or even European market.
Nanoborygo also includes a specially composed package of corrosion inhibitors, providing protection against corrosion of metals and metal alloys used in heating and cooling systems, such as aluminum, copper, brass, solder, cast iron, and steel. The Nanoborygo fluid meets high corrosion resistance requirements set for coolant fluids according to ASTM D 3306 and the Polish standard PN-C-40007:2000.
3. In which engines will the Nanofluid be used?
Will the fluid be applicable in conventional engines, or also in electric or hybrid vehicles?
According to the project assumptions, Nanoborygo is a fluid intended for use in both combustion and hybrid engines, which do not differ in the structure of their cooling systems.
Due to its unique properties, it can also be used as a cooling medium for batteries in electric vehicles. In the case of electric cars, there is a constant search for technological solutions that lead to a reduction in their weight, but this cannot come at the expense of system efficiency. Nanoborygo ensures high efficiency in heating and cooling processes while significantly reducing the volume of circulating fluid in the system, and consequently also the weight of the vehicle.
Another possible application of Nanoborygo is in cooling systems of electrical devices, where cooling efficiency must also be at the highest level.
4. Why is the Nanofluid eco-friendly?
The new nanofluid is intended to be an eco-friendly product – what is the basis for this feature of your solution?
As a base medium responsible for an appropriately low crystallization temperature, thus protecting the heating and cooling system from freezing, a polyol system (propylene glycols and glycerin) has been used.
The propylene glycols used are non-toxic, easily biodegradable, increase the base’s resistance to thermal degradation, and reduce the viscosity of the system at low temperatures. Glycerin, on the other hand, provides low COD (chemical oxygen demand) and increases susceptibility to preliminary biodegradation.
The base raw materials used come from renewable sources, ensuring diversification of the raw material base, and their production process ensures lower greenhouse gas emissions and lower electricity consumption compared to raw materials from fossil sources.
5. When will production begin?
At what stage is the project regarding the fluid? When can we expect its production?
The project is scheduled to be completed in April 2022. During its implementation, a dedicated 1/2-technical installation was designed and built to enable the scaling of the production method. This is necessary for such an innovative solution as the Nanoborygo fluid.
The challenge was not only to compose a fluid with the specified physicochemical and performance parameters but also to design an installation that allows for effective scaling of the method.
6. Who is the target group?
Who do you want to interest with the new product – directly car manufacturers or their suppliers, such as manufacturers of cooling systems for the OE market?
